Pain can result from injury, inflammation, muscle tension, joint problems, or irritation of the nervous system. When pain becomes persistent, it can also affect movement, sleep, stress, and quality of life.

How Acupuncture May Help

Acupuncture uses thin, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body. Research suggests acupuncture may influence the nervous system and the body’s natural pain-regulating mechanisms. It may also help reduce muscle tension and support mobility and physical function.

Common Pain Conditions

Acupuncture is commonly used as part of care for:

• Lower back pain
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Knee and joint pain
• Sciatica
• Headaches and migraines
• Muscle tension and stiffness
• Sports injuries
• Neuropathy and nerve-related pain
• Chronic pain

Why Treatment Is Individualized

Pain in the same area can have different causes. A proper assessment considers the location and type of pain, how long it has been present, previous injuries, activity level, overall health, and other symptoms.

Acupuncture may be used alone or alongside medical care, physical therapy, exercise, and other appropriate treatments. Persistent, severe, or unexplained pain should always be properly evaluated.

Hot flashes are common during perimenopause and menopause. They may cause sudden warmth, sweating, flushing, heart palpitations, and disrupted sleep.

How Acupuncture May Help

Acupuncture is commonly used to support women experiencing menopausal symptoms. Research suggests it may help regulate nervous-system responses involved in temperature control, stress, and sleep.

Common Symptoms

• Hot flashes
• Night sweats
• Sleep disturbances
• Fatigue
• Mood changes
• Stress and irritability

An Individualized Approach

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, hot flashes are evaluated together with sleep, digestion, energy, emotional health, and other symptoms. Treatment is individualized rather than based on one symptom alone.

Acupuncture may be used alongside appropriate medical care and healthy lifestyle changes to support comfort and well-being during the menopausal transition.

When your hip hurts, you feel it in almost everything you do—walking, standing, climbing stairs, turning in bed, or simply getting up from a chair. Over time, you may start moving differently just to avoid the pain.

In Chinese medicine, pain is often described by the principle: “When there is free flow, there is less pain; when flow is obstructed, pain can occur.” Injury, muscle tension, overuse, cold, or long-term changes in the body can all contribute to hip discomfort.

Acupuncture treatment focuses not only on the painful hip, but also on the muscles, joints, and areas that work together with it. The goal is to ease pain and tension, support circulation, and help you move more comfortably.

The goal is simple: less pain, easier movement, and helping you get back to the activities that matter to you.

Shoulder pain can affect much more than the shoulder itself. Reaching overhead, getting dressed, driving, sleeping on one side, or carrying everyday objects can become difficult. Common causes include overuse, injury, muscle tension, inflammation, arthritis, frozen shoulder, and rotator cuff–related problems. The neck, upper back, and posture may also contribute to shoulder symptoms.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pain is often associated with impaired circulation of Qi and Blood through the meridians. When movement through these pathways becomes restricted by injury, repetitive strain, muscle tension, or other factors, pain and stiffness may develop. Treatment therefore looks beyond the exact location of pain.

Acupuncture uses very fine needles at carefully selected points. Some points may be near the shoulder, while others may be located along related meridians in the arm, hand, neck, back, or legs. Point selection is individualized according to the location and nature of the pain, range of motion, and the patient’s overall condition.

Modern research offers another way to understand acupuncture. Needle stimulation can influence the nervous system and the body’s natural pain-regulating mechanisms, while local stimulation may affect circulation and muscle tension. This helps explain why acupuncture is commonly used as part of conservative care for musculoskeletal pain.

For some patients, acupuncture may be combined with cupping, gua sha, acupressure, or other Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques when appropriate. Treatment frequency also varies. A recent injury and a shoulder problem that has persisted for years should not automatically receive the same treatment plan.

A careful evaluation is important because shoulder pain can have many causes. Persistent pain, significant weakness, severe loss of motion, or pain following a serious injury should receive appropriate medical evaluation.

The purpose of acupuncture is not simply to place needles where it hurts. Good treatment begins by understanding why the shoulder hurts, how the surrounding areas are involved, and what is preventing comfortable movement. From there, treatment can focus on reducing pain and tension and supporting better mobility and function.

Low back pain can make sitting, walking, working, exercising, and sleeping difficult. Common causes include muscle strain, prolonged sitting, arthritis, disc problems, sciatica, previous injuries, and age-related changes.

In Chinese medicine, low back pain is evaluated by more than its location. We consider whether the pain is sharp or dull, whether it travels into the hip or leg, and whether movement, rest, heat, or cold changes the symptoms.

Acupuncture for Low Back Pain

Acupuncture may help influence pain signaling, muscle tension, circulation, and the nervous system. Treatment is individualized and may include acupuncture points around the back as well as related areas of the hips and legs.

A holistic approach also considers posture, movement, previous injuries, lifestyle, and overall health. When appropriate, acupuncture may be combined with cupping, gua sha, acupressure, or moxibustion.

The goal is not simply to address where it hurts, but to understand what may be contributing to the pain and support better movement, function, and long-term well-being.

Neck pain can affect much more than your neck. Muscle tension, poor posture, prolonged computer use, stress, injury, arthritis, and cervical spondylosis may contribute to stiffness, headaches, limited movement, or pain extending into the shoulders and upper back.

In Chinese medicine, neck pain may be associated with restricted circulation of Qi and Blood through the affected meridians. Acupuncture points are selected according to the location, type, and pattern of pain—not simply where the patient feels discomfort.

From a modern perspective, acupuncture may influence the nervous system and natural pain-regulating mechanisms, while helping reduce muscle tension and support local circulation and comfortable movement.

A holistic approach to neck pain also considers posture, stress, sleep, previous injuries, and daily activities. Acupuncture may be combined with cupping, gua sha, acupressure, or other Chinese medicine therapies when appropriate.

The goal is to help relieve pain and stiffness while supporting better neck mobility, function, and overall well-being.

Menopause is a natural stage of a woman’s life, not a disease. Yet the transition can bring significant changes. Hot flashes, night sweats, interrupted sleep, fatigue, anxiety, mood changes, dryness, headaches, and joint discomfort may appear together or change over time.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks at menopause differently. Rather than treating every woman according to the same diagnosis, TCM asks: What has changed in this particular woman’s body?

As women move through perimenopause and menopause, TCM often recognizes changes in Yin, Yang, Qi, Blood, and Kidney function. For example, a pattern of Yin deficiency may be associated with heat sensations, night sweating, dryness, and restless sleep, while other women may experience more fatigue, coldness, digestive changes, or emotional symptoms. Different patterns require different treatment strategies.

Acupuncture for menopause is therefore individualized. Treatment may be used to support the nervous system, relaxation, sleep, and management of symptoms such as hot flashes and stress. Chinese medicine may also consider nutrition, lifestyle, emotional well-being, and other symptoms occurring during this transition.

Menopause should not automatically be viewed as something that needs to be “fixed.” From a holistic TCM perspective, the goal is to understand the changes, support the body’s changing needs, and help each woman move through this important stage with greater balance, comfort, and vitality.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can look very different from one woman to another. Menstrual cramps, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, irritability, anxiety, fatigue, food cravings, and poor sleep may appear several days—or even longer—before the period begins.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks beyond hormones alone. The timing, type, and pattern of symptoms provide important information about how Qi and Blood are functioning throughout the menstrual cycle.

One of the most common TCM patterns associated with PMS is Liver Qi stagnation. When Qi does not move smoothly, women may experience irritability, emotional sensitivity, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or a feeling of tension before menstruation. When the circulation of Blood is also affected, cramping and more pronounced menstrual pain may occur.

Stress, sleep, digestion, physical activity, and overall health can all influence these patterns. This is why Chinese medicine does not treat every woman with PMS in exactly the same way.

Acupuncture for PMS is individualized according to the symptoms and menstrual pattern. The goal is to support smoother circulation of Qi and Blood, reduce tension and discomfort, promote relaxation, and help the body move through the menstrual cycle more comfortably.

From a TCM perspective, PMS symptoms are not simply something a woman should have to tolerate every month. They are signals worth understanding—and the pattern behind those signals can help guide more individualized care.

Joint pain is not always the same from day to day. Some people feel worse in cold or damp weather, while others notice more pain after activity, prolonged sitting, or first thing in the morning. These patterns can provide useful clues about what is contributing to the discomfort.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pays close attention to these differences. Joint pain may involve stagnation of Qi and Blood, while cold, dampness, previous injury, overuse, or weakness of the body over time may contribute to different patterns of pain and stiffness.

For example, pain that becomes worse in cold and damp weather is viewed differently from a joint that feels hot, swollen, and inflamed. Chronic stiffness and weakness may also require a different approach from a recent injury.

Acupuncture for joint pain is therefore individualized. Treatment may help reduce pain and muscle tension, support circulation, and improve comfortable movement. Depending on the pattern, acupuncture may also be combined with cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, or other Chinese medicine therapies.

Whether joint pain involves the knees, hips, shoulders, ankles, or other joints, TCM looks beyond the painful location. Understanding when the pain occurs, what makes it better or worse, and how the whole body is functioning helps guide more individualized care.

When pain stays with you for months or years, it can change the way you live. You may sleep differently, move more carefully, stop exercising, or avoid activities you once enjoyed. Eventually, the body begins to compensate—and the original painful area may no longer be the whole problem.

This is where Traditional Chinese Medicine looks deeper.

We ask questions that matter: Where did the pain begin? What does it feel like? What makes it worse? Does warmth help? Does cold weather bring it back? Is there numbness, weakness, stiffness, or fatigue?

Chronic pain can have many causes, including old injuries, arthritis, neuropathy, inflammation, surgery, long-term illness, and pain associated with cancer or cancer treatment. Each situation deserves a different approach.

In Chinese medicine, long-lasting pain is often understood through changes in the movement of Qi and Blood and the overall condition of the body. Acupuncture for chronic pain is therefore not simply about putting needles where it hurts. Treatment is individualized and may also include cupping, gua sha, acupressure, or moxibustion when appropriate.

For people living with cancer, acupuncture may be considered as supportive care alongside oncology treatment to help manage certain symptoms and improve comfort.

When pain persists, sometimes the most important question is not simply “Where does it hurt?”

It is “What is keeping this pain going, and what does this particular person need?”
