Breathing is something we rarely think about—until it becomes difficult. Asthma, chronic bronchitis, allergies, respiratory infections, Long COVID, chest tightness, cough, and shortness of breath can affect sleep, energy, exercise, and everyday life.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Lung system has a broader meaning than the lungs as organs alone. Lung Qi is traditionally associated with breathing, the movement of Qi throughout the body, the nose and throat, the skin, and the body’s protective functions. When Lung Qi is weakened or disrupted, symptoms may include cough, breathlessness, fatigue, frequent respiratory discomfort, or reduced stamina.
Acupuncture and Respiratory Wellness
Acupuncture is sometimes used as complementary care for people experiencing respiratory symptoms. Modern research is investigating how acupuncture may influence the nervous system, inflammatory responses, stress, and symptom perception, while TCM treatment focuses on restoring balance according to the individual’s pattern.
Chinese medicine also recognizes that the Lung does not work alone. Digestion, sleep, stress, nutrition, physical strength, and recovery after illness may all influence respiratory health. This becomes especially important for people recovering from prolonged illness or Long COVID, where fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, and reduced stamina may occur together.
A holistic approach may combine appropriate medical care, acupuncture, nutrition, breathing practices, rest, gradual activity, and lifestyle support. Traditional foods and ingredients such as ginger, citrus, apples, and honey can also be part of a nourishing diet when appropriate—but they should not be presented as cures for respiratory disease or Long COVID.
Chinese medicine asks us to look beyond one symptom. When breathing is affected, we consider the whole person—because the lungs function as part of a much larger, interconnected system.
